Fractional quantum Hall effect without Landau levels
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is the remarkable observation of quantized transport in two dimensional electron gases placed in a transverse magnetic field: the longitudinal resistance vanishes while the Hall resistance is quantized to a rational multiple of h/e2. The theory of the QHE is built largely around the special properties of single-particle free-electron states in a magnetic field—the ...
متن کاملFractional quantum Hall effect in the absence of Landau levels
It is well known that the topological phenomena with fractional excitations, the fractional quantum Hall effect, will emerge when electrons move in Landau levels. Here we show the theoretical discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the absence of Landau levels in an interacting fermion model. The non-interacting part of our Hamiltonian is the recently proposed topologically non-trivi...
متن کاملSpin Singlet Quantum Hall Effect and Nonabelian Landau-Ginzburg Theory
In this paper we present a theory of Singlet Quantum Hall Effect (SQHE). We show that the Halperin-Haldane SQHE wave function can be written in the form of a product of a wave function for charged semions in a magnetic field and a wave function for the Chiral Spin Liquid of neutral spin-12 semions. We introduce field-theoretic model in which the electron operators are factorized in terms of cha...
متن کاملThe Absence of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect at High Landau Levels
We compare the energies of the Laughlin liquid and a charge density wave in a weak magnetic field for the upper Landau level filling factors νN = 1/3 and 1/5. The charge density wave period has been optimized and was found to be ≃ 3Rc, where Rc is the cyclotron radius. We conclude that the optimal charge density wave is more energetically preferable than the Laughlin liquid for the Landau level...
متن کاملModel for a quantum Hall effect without Landau levels: Condensed-matter realization of the "parity anomaly"
The quantum Hall effect' (QHE) in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems is usually associated with the presence of a uniform externally generated magnetic field, which splits the spectrum of electron energy levels into Landau levels. In this Letter I show how, in principle, a QHE may also result from breaking of time-reversal symmetry (i.e., magnetic ordering) without any net magnetic fiux thro...
